jDoyle on Gossip Girl:

[I]t has very low viewer ratings but everybody knows about it. Teenagers watch it on their laptops and the series has one of the highest levels of delayed-viewing on PVRs. At the same time, certain elements of the media are obsessed with it. The cast has been featured on magazine covers and the New York Times calls it “one of the biggest influences on how young women spend.”

When Americans have a series that’s watched by important media people and by teenagers who downloaded it, they renew it and talk it up. When Canadians the CBC has a similar series, it’s shitcanned after it doesn’t immediately produce Corner Gas numbers with grandparents who’ve long since paid off the mortgage.
